Breaking Barriers

This Giving Tuesday, we’re celebrating the amazing nonprofits that are working hard to make a difference in our communities. Every day, these organizations work tirelessly to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, provide essential services, and support vulnerable populations. This Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to give back to the organizations that mean the most to you! There are many different ways to show your support, and we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite options below.

  • One great way to support nonprofits is by giving your time! Volunteers are the lifeblood of many organizations, and even an hour or two of your time can make a big difference. If you’re unsure where to start, consider checking out Idealist.org, which connects volunteers with opportunities in the area.
  • Another great way to give back is by giving financially or with goods. Many nonprofits rely on donations to keep their doors open and their programs running. If you’re able to, consider making a contribution to your favorite organization this Giving Tuesday.
  • There are also many ways to support nonprofits beyond giving your time or money. You can advocate for the organizations you care about by sharing their work on social media, writing letters to elected officials, or speaking up in your community.

Please note that there are incredible local nonprofits as well that are impactful in your community. We recommend doing some research here.

Nonprofits we love

Akyanna Smith-Gonzalez: AIDS Project Worcester
AIDS Project Worcester is a non-profit that helps those affected by HIV/AIDS as well as provides support to those who suffer from addiction. They provide transportation services, mental health support on-site, support groups, and a food bank on-site. Fun fact, I’ve volunteered/worked here in various capacities since I was 4 years old. My aunt is the CEO, and during the pandemic, I helped with COVID-19 testing for them for the state of Massachusetts.

Fatima Dainkeh: Resist
I love what Resist represents! They work to support those who are at the frontlines of justice and liberation work while also making sure that their internal structure is in alignment with their guiding principles.

Felicia Jadczak: The Brigid Alliance
The Brigid Alliance “gets people to abortion care, whatever it takes.” This organization works to ensure access for everyone and anyone who needs abortion care in the U.S. They help book, coordinate, and pay for expenses such as travel, lodging, and child care, reducing the barriers to support.

Kaelyn Kam: The Trevor Project
They’re giving support for suicide prevention and mental health for the LGBTQ+ youth community. They also offer support for allies!

Kia Rivera: Black Girls Run
They’re doing some incredible things in the run space when it comes to getting Black women to promote and live a healthy lifestyle. The Boston chapter is one of my favorites, but there are many chapters around the US!

Rachel Murray: She Should Run
She Should Run is an incredible organization whose mission is to get more women running for office in the US. We’re seeing some progress, but there’s SO much more to go, especially when taking an intersectional lens!

Rachel Murray: The 19th
Journalism is in trouble, and The 19th is addressing it. They’re an independent nonprofit newsroom that focuses on gender and policy, and I read pretty much every email they send my way (which is saying a lot!).

Rachel Sadler: Know Your Rights Camp
Know Your Rights Camp is a non-profit started by Colin Kaepernick to educate Black and Brown youth about their legal rights and provides legal counsel if they can’t afford it.

Rachel Sadler: The Conscious Kid
The Conscious Kid advocates for getting anti-racist children’s books approved for use in classrooms, which is so needed now more than ever!

Victoria Verlezza: Initiate Justice
I love this organization because its mission is to end incarceration in California. They believe we need the insights of people who have been directly impacted by the current system, those who know where it fails, and know what they need to be safe and treated fairly.
